Inspired by and a tribute to The Sea Sprite Motel, on the Strand in Hermosa Beach, CA, which is maintained today in much the same aesthetic style as it was in the 1950s. Like Gurney's Inn but on the other coast, The Sea Sprite was painted in sun-bleached, sea-sprayed blues and greens. Stylistically, the painting is inspired by mid-century abstract expressionists such as Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Helen Frankenthaler, Piet Mondrian, and Barnett Newman.
This painting plays well with “Gurney’s Inn” and “Crystal Pier Cottages,” both of which share its style and color palette, as well as its height.
Acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas with a built-in mounting bracket.
The title is painted on the inch and a half wide bottom edge of the canvas frame, where it can be viewed from below, but doesn't interfere with the picture itself.
