A celebration of the day the Supreme Court officially acknowledged the unconstitutionality of the Defense of Marriage Act and other laws and statutes aimed at divesting lesbians, gay men, and bisexuals of the civil, financial, and emotional rights that adhere in marriage in the U.S. This painting alludes to the further cracking of the heteronormative civil system in the States that has for so long forced LGBT folks to closet our affective and sexual relationships, as well as everything most basic and important about our very selves. And so the colors here are those of the rainbow flag, as well as the lavender, pink, and blue signifying lesbian, gay, and bisexual, respectively. These are all actually protruding or pushing through the cracked grey of the "system." These colors can also be glimpsed through the fissures of the cracks. Beneath it all is the blue of a clear blue sky I idealistically imagine us all looking up into when this system is eventually completely cracked and broken away by those of us engaged in this struggle for civil and human rights.
