Inspired by and a tribute to the original Gurney's Inn on Long Island, in Montauk, NY. Though a luxury spa and resort today, in the 1950s Gurney's was a scattered collection of sea cabins, painted in blues and greens sunbleached and sea-sprayed. Stylistically, the painting is inspired by mid-century abstract expressionists such as Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Helen Frankenthaler, Piet Mondrian, and Barnett Newman.
This painting plays well with “Crystal Pier Cottages” and “The Sea Sprite Motel,” both of which share its style and color palette, as well as its 4-foot height.
Acrylic on gallery-wrapped canvas with a built-in mounting bracket.
The title is painted on the inch and a half wide bottom edge of the canvas frame, where it can be viewed from below, but doesn't interfere with the picture itself.
